J1 Visa Interview

What is the purpose of your visit to the US?

I’m a medical doctor and i have been selected for a Post Graduate Internal Medicine Training in Oklahoma City.

When did you get matched and in which hospital?

I matched on 15th March this year at University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Centre.

How much would you be paid?

I will be paid a stipend of about 62,000 USD.

Are you currently working?

No I have taken personal time off to complete my onboarding formalities and spend some time with the family.

Have you been to the US before?

Yes, I have been to US three times before. The last time was in the last week of January this year. I was here to take my USMLE Step 3 exam. Before that I visited last year for my Clinical Observerships.

You mentioned 8 weeks last time when you travelled to US, can i know more about why you stayed 5 months.

My initial intended duration of stay was 8 weeks as I only had 2 observerships lined up. However during my time in US I got more opportunities and hence I decided to extend my stay and pursue them.

Do you have anyone in the US?

I do not have immediate family members in the US. I do have some friends and colleagues.

What are your future plans? Do you have plans for fellowship/subspeciality training?

I plan to finish my internal medicine training in next 3 years and return back to my country to practice medicine in my hometown and join my fathers practice. As of now I do not have any plans for fellowship.

What is the duration of your residency? Why have you mentioned 1 year as intended duration of stay?

My intended duration of stay is 1 year as my DS2019 is only valid for 1 year. However the duration of my training is 3 years and the contract gets renewed annually.

What responsibilities will you have during residency?

I will be involved in clinical patient care like patient admissions, discharges, diagnosis and formulating treatment plans under the supervision of the attending physicians and my senior residents.

What have you been doing since graduation?

I took some time off to study for my USMLE exams and then later on I went to US to complete few Clinical Observerships.

Tell me more about your program. Why this program/university?

Oklahoma University is one the of the most prestigious universities in the US which is over 100 years old and has served the state even before Oklahoma was even a state. They have an excellent internal medicine training program with abundance of hands on experience as well as research opportunities.

Why Oklahoma City?

Well I have never been to OKC. I chose it solely because of the quality of training at the Oklahoma University. I do however have a couple of colleagues and friends in and around the area and I also like the fact that the cost of living is very low.

Why US?

I want to go to the US for the excellent quality of training and research opportunities.

Who is sponsoring you?

The current one time flight ticket will be sponsored by my father but I will be paid a stipend during my training.
